Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or sulfhydric acid. They are most present in big quantity in hot water.

Hydrogen sulfide is responsible for several problems which the most common are:

  • Water contaminated with hydrogen sulphide is easily recognizable due to the very unpleasant smell of boiled egg, which is at the same time the first problem caused by this substance. The smell is more intense in the case of hot water, but it can be noticed also in the case of cold water.

Sulphur hydrogen leads to rusting of installations made of iron, brass, steel or copper.

  • Tea and coffee do not have a pleasant taste if they are prepared with hydrogen sulphide water. Also, food cooked with hydrogen sulphide contaminated water will not have the same flavor.
  • The substance stains the sanitary objects, the stains being yellow or black.
  • Those who have a softener should know that a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide can damage the cationic resin. It may happen that the smell of boiled egg is noticeable, but water analyzes do not indicate the presence of hydrogen sulphide. The explanation is that some bacteria found in the softener system use sulfur as a source of energy.
